Suffolk Coastal Cottages
Whether temperatures are soaring or bracing winds are blowing, there’s something special about being at the seaside. And if the seaside you’re at is in Suffolk you’re guaranteed a great time whatever the weather… the county’s coastline has something for everyone and a splendid range of cottages to suit every holiday party.
Suffolk’s coastline is constantly changing – shingle banks, sand dunes, reed-fringed creeks, salty marshes and spotless sands. But there’s an ever-present backdrop of breathtaking scenery and a dignified charm which draws visitors back to the county time after time.
"Mentioned in the Domesday Book as an important fishing port, Southwold received a town charter from Henry VII in 1489 and is alive with history even today."
Picture-postcard towns such as Southwold, Aldeburgh and Felixstowe are as fashionable now as they were generations ago, and today have all the shops, restaurants and hostelries that take the hassle out of a self-catering holiday. They all have beautiful beaches too – perfect for bucket and spade-style fun as well as walks along the tideline.
Affluent Walberswick, once a thriving port, is popular with ramblers and nature lovers as well as crabbing enthusiasts – the annual British Open Crabbing Championship takes place here – while for quirkiness of a different kind you can’t beat the ‘model village’ of Thorpeness, created in 1910 as a private coastal resort complete with country club, golf course and holiday homes.
Culture abounds on the Suffolk coast, with the Aldeburgh Festival held at the beautifully-restored Maltings Concert Hall in Snape an annual highlight. Benjamin Britten, founder of the festival, is commemorated in the Scallop, a Maggi Hambling sculpture set on the beach between Aldeburgh and Thorpeness.
Head to the north of the county close to busy Lowestoft and you’ll find one of Suffolk’s best-kept secrets. Kessingland has a stunning beach which is unspoilt and stretches for miles – this really is the place to get away from it all!
